VOICES OF ENVIRONMENTALISTS

Concerns about our planet has led to the rise of various movements and organizations, many involving young people or even led by the youths. Young people taking actions and demanding authorities to take actions have been a source of inspiration to many out there. My hope is that our voices as youths are heard, taken seriously and continue to inspire others.

Below are environmentalists from different regions of the world in different fields that are passionate and are doing their part in creating awareness and taking actions. Take a look at what they have to say, their visions, their experiences and how they imagine the future would be like. Hope their work and words inspire many to take actions!

Patricia Kombo (KENYA)

I aspire to promote sustainable land use and environmental conservation through Environmental Education and creation of environmental clubs.

Patricia Kombo is an environmental educator and the founder of PaTree Initiative that endeavors to introduce environmental education in schools and incorporate students in tree planting and sustainable land use.

Benard Kioko (KENYA)

We are custodians of both future generations and the environment. Our duty is to protect not to destroy. This calls for inclusive efforts to environmental management and conservation for a better and greener future.

Benard Kioko is the founder of Green Economy Foundation of Kenya

Joan Wainoga (KENYA)

‘My ideal future is one where everyone big or small is aware of the environment and then the question will change from, who will to how will we? Nature has answers to most of our questions and the detrimental effects we brought on our Earth’

Joan Wainoga is an environmental enthusiast with a degree in Management of Agro-ecosystems and the Environment. She has experience in waste water management and water treatment technologies. She’s an experienced laboratory analyst and researcher. A foodie and always ready for an adventure.

Philipp Ullmann (Switzerland)

As a scuba dive instructor, I have seen and experienced the destruction of reefs and the pollution with plastic waste worldwide. Therefore, in my opinion education is the main key to success. Only if people really know nature, they will love and ultimately protect it. We all depend on nature but nature doesn’t depend on us humans.

Philipp is an Eco Warrior for the environment and a founding member of Ark 2030, which aims to reverse global warming by restoring the 500 million hectares of destroyed ecosystems. He is also liaison of One Better World which is an organization and a multi-platform initiative with a 10 year strategy to equip people everywhere to act upon UN SDGs 2030. He is also a member of Impactr. His mission is to empower young people to create a better world through small collective actions.

Sumaiya Harunani (KENYA)

We all deserve to live in a clean and healthy environment, which can be attained through actions such as use of clean energy, reducing carbon footprint, going green as well as effective solutions to the proper disposal of plastic and other non-recyclable waste, this will also enhance economic growth. I believe that along with my fellow passionate conservationist, these can be achieved soon.

Sumaiya Harunani is teacher by profession and the founder of Blue Earth Organization, whose main aim is to create awareness on the conservation of marine life, beaches and environment. They conduct various activities like clean-ups, tree plantings and fighting plastic pollution.

Rachael Ange (Uganda)

I am passionate about sustainable agriculture and I encourage the adoption of sustainable practices like agro-forestry and Integrated Pest Management that minimizes chemical use and other environmentally friendly practices. This is because, high levels of industrialization and conventional agriculture has resulted in depletion of natural resources and further contributed to the climate crisis. Hence, we need to adopt more sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate effects of climate change and to attain food security.

Rachael is a sustainable agriculture enthusiast, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture (Crop Major) from Makerere University.

Aarav Seth (India)

The future that I imagine would be green and have an eco-friendly mindset. That future will be one which has resolved the climate issues and is working towards making the sector better. The future I imagine, would be a much better one.

Aarav is a 12 year old climate activist. He is very passionate about the environment and he plants trees every weekend to increase green spaces. He has planted more than 3500 trees. His motto is ‘Each one, teach one to plant one’. He is also the Child Ambassador of SDG Choupal and Ambassador of SDGs for Children.

Let’s continue with our efforts to make our planet better. Every effort counts!
